Spider Veins Treatments | Sclerotherapy
What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a procedure use to treat those small yet unsightly clusters of red, blue or purple veins that most commonly appear on the thighs, calves and ankles. A medicine is injected into the vessels, which makes them shrink. It is used for children and young adults with vascular or lymphatic malformations. In adults, sclerotherapy is most often used to treat varicose veins.
What causes Spider Veins?
Though millions of people have this condition it is seen predominantly in women. Spider veins are small, thin veins that lie close to the surface of the skin. These veins become swollen and dilated, which increases pressure inside the vein itself and the spider veins appear. In women, the ability of veins to resist increased pressure is reduced when the body's estrogen level drops.
A number of things can cause spider veins: Heredity, Pregnancy, Weight Gain, Hormonal Shifts, Prolonged Standing and/or Sitting, certain medications.
What is the Procedure Like?
The veins are injected with a sclerosing solution, which causes them to collapse and fade from view. The procedure may also remedy the bothersome symptoms associated with spider veins, including aching, burning, swelling and night cramps.
How many treatments will I need?
Three or more sessions are usually required to achieve optimal results. You should also be aware that the procedure treats only those veins that are currently visible; it does nothing to permanently alter the venous system or prevent new veins from surfacing in the future.
